The Last Haunt by Max Booth III

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was not what I expected.

What I liked about this chronicle:
1) The book cover is phenomenal. Props to the author for a great pick.
2) The interviews gave plenty of alternating POVs throughout the book.
3) There are at least two laugh out loud funny moments.
4) The contract was a great addition to Gus’s haunts as it makes this novella a psychological horror, as well as the other torturous things that he does to foolish saps willing to participate in his haunts.

What I didn’t like which led to me not giving this book a five-star rating:
1) The ending was lame.
2) The profanity was excessive, and superfluous at times.
3) The blaspheming: minus a star for this and the overbearing swearing. It impeded my reading experience because there was a lot of it. I thought it was unrealistic for people being interviewed to cuss a storm like this. For those of you who are reading this review who haven’t read the book, it seemed like every person interviewed used obscenities, and I’m not exaggerating.
4) There weren’t any scary moments in this book – it’s purely psychological.
5) This book did drag at one or two points. I could have easily put this book down, and not gotten back into it. In fact, I forced myself to push through wanting to get the full picture of the story. I wanted to know what would happen that way I could judge it fairly.
6) With the number of characters being interviewed, it was somewhat difficult for me to keep up at first. Since the main character is already dead, this didn’t help my reading experience.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
