Another Day at the Office by James Kaine
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
It’s OK.
This story is about a man named John who is a bigshot. John has a beautiful wife, kids, and a great job. Lately, he has been working extra hours, since his secretary quit. He could not find a suitable replacement for her. John has been acting paranoid since a strange man has been following him.
Pros:
1) The book cover is attention-grabbing.
2) It’s a short story.
3) Vivid descriptions.
Cons:
1) The book cover is misleading because no one gets hanged in Another Day at the Office.
2) The ending was predictable, shocking, and disturbing. It made little sense to me why he would keep the dead body of his secretary/associate there. Why not bury her?
3) There are loose ends. Why is John a serial killer? After reading his backstory, it makes little sense that he would want to murder people. Why did he kill his secretary? This is unclear in the story.
4) I did not like the profanity; it’s superfluous.
